Two weeks after Rushdie stabbing, India reacts: Horrific, wish him speedy recovery
India Thursday condemned the stabbing of Salman Rushdie as “terrible”, his first official reaction that occurred almost two weeks after the incident in New York.
India always opposes violence and extremism. We condemn a terrible attack on Salman Rushdie and we hope he is a fast recovery, “said a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Arindam Bagchi in response to the question of the weekly briefing.
While the attack on Rushdie triggered a global anger, India maintains a real silence.India is one of the first countries to ban its novel, Satanic Verses, after Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa in 1989 which called for his death after publication.
He suffered a broken heart and broke the nerves in the arms and eyes, said his agent Andrew Wylie. Rushdie is likely to lose injured eyes.
The striker, Hadi Matar, who is 24 years old, said he was innocent for the accusations originating from the attack through his lawyer.
An Iranian government official denied that Tehran was involved in the attack, even though he confirmed the stabbing.
