Afghanistan: Asylum seeker waits for decision over UK refugee claim

Mohammed, whose name was changed, was forced to leave the country in 2021 without his wife and children when his life was threatened.

He now lives in Hampshire, but a year after claiming asylum in England he is still waiting for a decision.

The government said it was aimed at considering the claim “without unnecessary delay”.

Mohammed left Afghanistan after his work campaigned for women’s rights to make the Taliban make the Taliban control the country when the US troops retreat.

He said he decided to escape to England when his car was shot when he was driving to work.Mohammed’s family could not join him in the UK unless he was given the status of refugees by the government.

Although contacting the Home Office several times he has not been told why his application has not been decided.

He said: “I am very worried about them because the Taliban conducted a search operation from door to door.

I am afraid that when they are going to my house and when they are going to ask questions, they will find that they are all mine.”

Like other asylum seekers, Mohammed also could not work until his request was decided, and had to live from a government grant of £ 40.85 a week.

He said this means that sometimes he didn’t eat for a few days because he could not afford food.

Living life as a asylum seeker is really difficult. Sometimes I feel that I am not part of this beautiful world,” he added.

But Mohammed said life in England was a only hope for him and his family, and he would not stop fighting.

All asylum claims are considered based on cases per case, based on the facts presented by the prosecutor.”
