USB C on iPhone? It’s already a reality. Kind of
Ple is the only main smartphone brand that still has not switched to a USB type port. Instead, the Cupertino giant uses its exclusive lighting connector, forcing iPhone users to bring additional cables. While we don’t know when Apple will throw the lightning connector on the iPhone, Youtuber DIY has engineered the back of the iPhone X to install a type C USB port on it.
This impressive achievement was achieved by Kennni Pillonel, a Swiss robotics student with an electronic background (via Appleinsider). In short YouTube, Pillonel gave us our first view on the iPhone with a US USB type connector. The 40 second clip shows the modified iPhone X displays the type C connector which is charged through the USB cable type C. The modified connector also supports data transfer. See the video below to see it yourself: Pillonel said he turned the Apple C94 connector and made the PCB itself with a US USB port that he managed to fit on the iPhone X. YouTuber hasn’t clarified whether the iPhone through a modified USB C port has a negative impact, such as slower charging speed.
Pillonel has worked on this Dyi project for some time now. Back in May, he posted a proof-of-concept video on the YouTube channel that displays the iPhone USB-C mod and the challenge he faced put everything together. In the fast video update last month, he revealed that he had ordered a flexible PCB and was on track to achieve his goal. And now he finally did it. If you are interested in learning more about the project, you can check the blog’s posts, which detail the technical side of things. Pillonel said he would immediately post a full long video on the channel displaying exactly how he achieved this achievement.
